30 strategies to help ensure medication adherence

  1. Greet patient by name and mention the name often.
  2. Ask the patient to repeat what has to be done.
  3. Keep the directions on the prescription label as simple as possible.
  4. Give clear instructions on the exact treatment regimen, preferably in writing.
  5. Make use of special reminder containers and calendars.
  6. Call the patient if a refill is needed.
  7. Emphasize the importance of adherence at each office visit.
  8. Acknowledge the patient's efforts to adhere at each visit.
  9. Involve the patient's spouse or partner.

  11. Avoid medical jargon.
  12. Use short words and short sentences.
  13. Repeat instructions.
  14. Make advice as specific and detailed as possible.
  15. Find out what the patient's worries are; do not confine yourself merely to gathering objective medical information.
  16. Find out what the patient's expectations are; if they cannot be met, explain why.
  17. Provide information about the diagnosis and the cause of the illness.
  18. Adopt a friendly rather than a business-like attitude.
  19. Spend some time conversing about non-medical topics.
  20. Long-term therapy should include more frequent office visits to ensure patient medication adherence.
  21. Provide patient with behavioral contract.
  22. Ask patients to monitor their drug intake.
  23. Explain consequences of medication non-adherence.
  24. Provide a card listing medication dose, indication, and time.
  25. Link medication times to daily routine events.
  26. Ask the patient to recall in detail the medication(s) taken.
  27. Involve family members.
  28. Make available audiovisual aids, written materials, and computerized drug information.
  29. Instruct patients to pay attention to adverse side effects and to inform the physician about adverse reactions.
  30. Increase motivation by enlisting the patient in the decision-making process.
