TIP OF THE WEEK

Tomatoes Removed from Salmonella Watch List, Jalapenos and Serrano Peppers Added

In a July 17, 2008 announcement from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the agency removed earlier warnings to consumers about fresh tomatoes due to a potential connection with a recent Salmonella outbreak.

The FDA release states, “Consumers may resume enjoying any type of fresh tomato, including raw red plum, raw red Roma, and raw red round tomatoes.”

However, the FDA and the CDC continue to investigate potential links between the recent outbreak and jalapeno/serrano peppers. High-risk populations such as infants, the elderly, and immune-compromised people should avoid eating jalapeno and serrano peppers as the investigation continues.
