EHR to Improve Primary Care
Is your physician practice using an electronic health record (EHR) that is certified by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT)?
If the answer is yes, then you are eligible to participate in a two-year project to improve care management processes with the assistance of quality improvement specialists from Ohio KePRO. The Prevention Project will focus on using your existing CCHIT-certified electronic health record to improve rates of breast cancer and colorectal cancer screenings, as well as pneumococcal and influenza immunizations. Participants will also learn new skills and techniques that can be applied to other quality measures.
Benefits of participation
- Free consultation on care management techniques, workflow and process redesign, and electronic data reporting
- Increase efficiency while improving patient care and health outcomes
- Use your electronic health record proactively to manage patient populations and evaluate your performance on key quality measures

PAST SUCCESSES – 2006/2007
In 2006, 152 physician practices representing 368 physicians enrolled in the Ohio Doctor’s Office Quality – Information Technology (DOQ-IT) project. Through the DOQ-IT project, Ohio KePRO worked with selected small to medium-sized physician offices to assist with selection, implementation, and use of EHRs. After assisting medical practices to implement EHR systems, Ohio KePRO helps them identify ways to use the EHR to improve the quality of care they provide to their patients, and to facilitate better management of care for patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and hypertension.
By September 2007, among these 152 practices, 68 percent that did not have an HER signed a contract for one and 37 percent that did not have an EHR installed one. Of those with a fully installed EHR, 87 percent are able to identify patients by disease or disease risk, generate reminders and prompts, and produce patient-specific care plans.
