Through the implementation of the National Quality Strategy, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is calling for a reduction of healthcare-acquired conditions (HACs) for Medicare patients nationwide by 40 percent by 2014. In Ohio, Ohio KePRO is working with nursing homes, hospitals, and other healthcare providers to help achieve this goal.
We are partnering with nursing home leaders to reduce various HACs, such as pressure ulcers and physical restraints. Initiatives to address other HACs for which there are data and evidence-based interventions (such as falls and catheter-associated urinary tract infections) will be added in the future.
Partnering hospitals are focusing their improvement efforts on a number of topics related to healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs), such as:
- Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs)
- Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs)
- Clostridium difficile infections (CDIs)
- Surgical site infections (SSI)
The HAC and HAI projects will engage nursing homes and hospitals to improve patient outcomes and process of care measures; this will be accomplished through technical assistance, education, and the development of a statewide Learning and Action Network.
