This independent study module was developed in support of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for Nursing Homes. Although its targeted audience is nurses, information in this presentation may also be helpful for nursing assistants or other direct care workers. Information contained in the reading materials has been extrapolated from materials and articles as referenced.
Upon successful completion of the post-test, reviewing the handouts, and thorough knowledge gained from the reading materials, the participant will:
- Describe the definition of a physical restraint, as used in nursing homes.
- Discuss how and why restraints should be reduced or eliminated in nursing homes.
- Identify at least five alternatives to physical restraints.
- Discuss the legal requirements of restraint use in nursing homes.
