Account for over 300,000 Medicare hospitalizations per year at the cost of $9,780 per discharge
The American Heart Association estimates that nationally an additional 40,000 lives a year would be saved if 85% of patients received the care processes measured in this project. It goes without saying that many more lives will be saved if the target of 100% is achieved.
In the Year 2000 there were nearly 20,000 AMI Medicare discharges in Ohio's 160 acute care hospitals. Average length of stay was 5.6 days at a cost estimated to be 18 million dollars.
