Pneumonia, which is largely preventable with appropriate immunizations, strikes the Medicare population especially hard as 90% of all deaths from pneumonia occur in individuals over the age of 65.
The average length of stay for the 31,000 Medicare beneficiaries admitted to Ohio hospitals with pneumonia was 6.2 days. This diagnosis, as you well know, translates into millions of dollars of losses for hospitals each year.
